Claw Clip Twist for Long, Thick Hair

In a claw clip twist, the twist holds the hair and the clip holds the twist. On long, thick hair the order matters, because a clip alone can't grip that much.

How to do a claw clip twist, step by step

  1. On freshly washed or very silky hair, spray it lightly first so the clip has something to grip.
  2. Gather your hair at the nape and twist it.
  3. Bring the twist up so it lies flat against the back of your head.
  4. Clip over the twist, in the middle, just above the thickest part.
  5. Leave the ends out and let them fall, or tuck them under for a neater twist.

Why it slips past the waist

Clean, straight hair is slippery, and past the waist there's enough of it to slide a clip down within the hour. Texture first gives the teeth something to hold, and clipping the twist rather than loose hair means the clip is holding a shape, not a weight.

What you need

Five inches across: on hair this long, the size is what lets it close over the twist.
